How to Choose Your Wedding Color Palette

Start from a feeling, not a trend. Choose one anchor color you love, build a palette of three to five tones around it using a roughly 60-30-10 balance, and test it against your venue’s light before you commit. Here’s the full method.

Color is the first thing a guest registers abour your wedding — before the words, before the details. As a designer who teaches color theory, I’ve watched couples spend weeks paralyzed by swatches. The problem is almost always that they started with a trend instead of a feeling. Here’s how to do it in the right order.

Start with the feeling, then the color

Do you want your day to feel warm and intimate, or crisp and airy? Grounded and earthy, or bright and celebratory? Name the feeling first — color is how you translate it. This is also where your story lives: a shade that means something to the two of you will always beat a trending one.

The 60-30-10 balance

The most harmonious palettes aren’t equal parts. One dominant tone (about 60%), one secondary (about 30%), and one accent used sparingly (about 10%). That accent is what people remember — a single terracotta or deep green against a quiet base does more than five colors competing.

Test it where it will live

A palette that sings on your screen can fall flat under a venue’s warm evening light — or against its stone, its greenery, its florals. Look at your colors in the actual setting and season before you lock them in.

Let it carry across everything

Once your palette is right, it becomes the thread that ties the whole wedding together — invitation, signage, website, the smallest detail. That consistency is exactly what we design at Alibombo. See how a palette becomes a full wedding universe.

“A palette isn’t decoration — it’s the quietest way your wedding says who you are. Get it right, and you barely notice it; get it wrong, and it’s all anyone feels.” — Mariale Hernández, Alibombo
